About Jawahar Public School

Jawahar Public School, situated in a serene rural set up of Edava near the palm–fringed Varkala beach is owned and managed by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) of the St. Joseph’s Province, Thiruvananthapuram. St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the founder of the CMI Congregation, was one of the pioneers of education in Kerala in the 19th Century and he promoted education for all, without any distinction of caste, creed or religion. Following the footsteps of their Founder, the CMI Congregation now runs hundreds of educational institutions all over India.
This school, that started as a Nursery School with the name ‘Jawahar Vidhya Bhavan’ in 1976, by some local philanthropists, was later handed over to CMI St. Joseph’s Province, TVM in 1997. Along With Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, the CMI congregation, believes that the future of India is shaped in the villages. It is this belief that inspired the CMI Congregation to take over the management of this school, to render better quality education to the children of this area and the nearby localities.
